The back to back defeat against Arsenal and Wolverhampton last month could hardly change the mind of those in charge of the Manchester Giants, as a result Ole was appointed as the permanent manager at the end of March. While the Norwegian came up with the desired result against Watford, he saw his side suffer yet again when they faced the Wolves.
These 3 losses have made it clear that United require few big signings in order to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. While the problem in defense is still fairly visible, the recent speculations over Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic’s future at Old Trafford have made the former United forward rethink about his midfield options. As a result, reports from numerous sources suggest that the Manchester Reds are willing to break the bank this summer and bring in some young firepower.
To cover up for their defensive miseries, the United boss is keeping a keen eye on the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Raphaël Varane, Skriniar and Wan-Bissaka. The club is also reportedly interested in selling the likes of Marcos Rojo and Darmian.
While the defensive problems have been visible throughout a rather underwhelming season, the midfield problems have clearly risen with Mata and Herrera running out of contract by the end of the season. Herrera is rumoured to have agreed a deal in principle with the Ligue 1 giants, Paris Saint Germain and Juan Mata has not been given a contract extension until now. Ole looks to be interested in signing the Spanish midfielder, Saul Niguez to fill up the void that might be left with the departure of Ander Herrera.
On the attacking front, Alexis Sanchez’s move from the England capital to Manchester has hardly been pleasing enough for both the player and the club. The Chilean star is likely to be sold this summer as the curse of the number 7 jersey simply doesn’t seem to end. Jodan Sancho has been seen as a potential replacement for the former Arsenal player and might as well be involved in a big money move in this summer itself with United pinning his name up as a top priority signing.
With the club willing to break the bank, it will be interesting to see how Ole tries to come up with a squad which is supposed to give their arch rivals a tough competition. However, the Norwegian tactician is willing to give the youngsters their fair share of chances in the future despite the numerous additions that are meant to happen before the beginning of the next season.
