Liverpool vs Manchester City: 5 players to keep an eye on at Anfield Showdown

It’s the clash of the titans. Two of the biggest teams of modern football, Liverpool and Manchester City, will fight it out today at Anfield. This fixture has become the most important game in the entire Premier League season for the past few years as it has decided the fate of the League on multiple occasions, and today will be no different. With Liverpool looking to extend their lead to 9 points at the top and City definitely out to cut the deficit, this fixture promises to be an exciting encounter. With players like Virgil Van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Mohd. Salah, Kevin DeBruyne, Sergio Aguero etc all gracing the football pitch let’s look at five players who can change the tide of the game in an instant.

1. Kevin De Bruyne.

KDB has been amazing for City since he joined them in 2015. An extraordinary passer of the ball, he has assisted 9 of City’s 35 goals this season. He also was a venomous left foot and can chip in with a goal every now and then. He is in a class of his own and is arguable the best passer of the ball in the league. He would surely be too hot to handle for Van Dijk and company.

2. Sadio Mane.

He has been Liverpool’s saviour this season. With Mo Salah not being anywhere close to his best, Mane has stepped up big time and has been the most consistent of the red’s front three this season. Apart from goalscoring heroics, his passion, dedication and all round presence on the pitch lifts those around him and demands more from them. He would be crucial if Liverpool want to secure all three points today.

3. Sergio Aguero.

There has not been a season in which Aguero has not been in scintillating form. With 173 goals in 249 game he has led the attack for Manchester City under 4 different managers. But his record at Anfield is abysmal. Having scored seven times against the reds he has never scored at Anfield and this would be the best opportunity to break his duck.

4. Virgil Van Dijk.

A rock at the back and the man who single-handedly changed the Liverpool side Van Dijk will need to be at his absolute best against Aguero and company. With Liverpool chasing he title again this tie would is crucial and may decide the fate of the two teams like it has done in the past. With Matip injured, he would need to be more committed than usual as his probable defensive partner, Lovren is too prone to errors.

5. Trent Alexander-Arnold.

What an asset he has been to Liverpool. For far too long has Liverpool played with average full backs in their ranks. But this has now changed with Trent and Robertson on their respective ends Liverpool now has the defence that can challenge the best in the world and come out on top. No player has had more crosses than him this season, an amazing feat for a 21 year old. The biggest reason for this is Klopp’s reliance on him to provide that cutting edge ball in the final third and with Liverpool lacking a number 10 he becomes crucial to Klopp’s plan.
