Talk about a more thrilling day than today? Four quality sides taking on their respective opponents, as they all fight to secure a place in semifinals of the FIFA World Cup. As the first game of the day would witness South Americans Uruguay facing one of the strongest contenders in the World Cup, which is France, here’s all you need to know about the said tie.
1. France’s challenge.
There’s no doubt that France have got enormous depth in every position in their squad, but today’s tie would test the perseverance of their attack force and defense. Having Greizmann and Mbappe in attack, who have combined scored 5 of France’s 7 total goals in the tournament; the French side would give a top notch challenge to Uruguayans. The midfield which contains talented Paul Pogba and workhorse Ngolo Kante would surely be a delight to watch as Tolisso or Nzonzi would fancy their chances to start in place of suspended Blaise Matuidi. There wouldn’t be a more perfect time to for either of them to grab the moment and perform, right?
Meanwhile the French defense needs to be alert as they have conceded 4 goals in 4 games, with three of those four goals coming in previous knockout game against Argentina.
2. Uruguay’s dilemma.
Whether to field injured Cavani or start Suarez alongside Stuani, will be the biggest puzzle for Uruguay’s coach Oscar Tabarez. La Celeste knows how tough their opponents are and with injury issue to their star forward Edinson Cavani who scored a brace in the last game it would be a very tough call to make at this point in the competition. Good thing amidst this dilemma is that Stuani linked up well with Suarez in the last game when Cavani had to be substituted after suffering injury. Whichever decision Tabarez takes, it will be a gamble for sure.
3. Contrasting difference.
If you look at the defense of both the sides then without a doubt Uruguay’s is the best, who have conceded just 1 goal in their 4 played games. While rolling the eyes over France, they were easily exploited many times against Australia and conceded three goals against Argentina; something which no one expected to happen to side like France. In absolute measure French defense will be under immense pressure, with only relief being the un-surety of Cavani starting as opposition player. As for South Americans, the pair of Godin and Gimenez would make life tough for any attack to outplay the two. It would be some battle to watch right there at the back.
4. Who said what?
“In 2014 it was another adversary, and another France team. What’s important is to maintain a high level. A quarter-final in 2014, a final at UEFA EURO 2016, and now a quarter-final again. my team is competitive, that’s what it looks like to me”, says Didier Deschamps.
“We do not know what the story will be tomorrow, but we really want to win the match”, said Oscar Tabarez.
